CaughtOffside say that Man United are readying a bid for Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to hijack Liverpool’s advances for the Hoffenheim youngster.

Should Sigurdsson be presented with the chance to join Man United he may well elect to pass on the offer to reunite with Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.

Set to join Liverpool in a £8.2 million deal.

Hoffenheim Manager Markus Babbel has given the midfielder a prolonged holiday until June 30th to finalise a move to the Premier League.

    Latest on Sigurdsson:

*Spoken to Reading and Liverpool individually on Thursday and Friday of last week
*Reading have offered a more lucrative contract to the former academy graduate
*Spurs are rumoured to be interested, although i believe it is a two way tussle between Liverpool and Reading
*Player has flown back to Iceland to weigh up his future this weekend.

Come home Gylfi, first team football, would be in your prime position, back with your best mates, earning more money and a firm statement to teams in the Zingarevich era !

Now I have some news that is bound to excite Liverpool and Reading fans having spoken to an Icelandic journalist named Brynjar Ingi Erluson (twitter @brynjarerluson) about the situation. He has confirmed the fact that it is a Liverpool vs Reading showdown and that Spurs are not in the picture as he put, "I'm afraid so. Gylfi has no interest at all signing for a club that has no manager. #HisOwnWords". Although this does not 100% rule Spurs out of the race, it shows that we know who the two favorites are.

He has also made the point that Gylfi is indeed in Iceland and plans to return to the UK on tuesday. He has been mulling over his big decision whilst enjoying himself as well due to being spotted playing tennis with an Icelandic national team mate.

He is also of the belief it is something of a battle of the managers.

Reading have offered more money and are his academy club.

Liverpool are a more prestigious club.

Both clubs have made good reasons as to why he should join them but he believes that the main sway will be whether he joins the man who gave him his Reading debut and took him into the Premier League (Brendan Rodgers) or whether he will join the man who scouted him in Iceland and brought him to the UK and gave him his first big break. (Brian McDermott).

Now one thing that is known is the fact that Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson scouted Gylfi a couple of times last season. He has also told me that Gylfi said that it would be tough to turn down Manchester United to Icelandic media. Therefore if the Red Devils were to through in a late bid then there could be another twist in what has been an extraordinarily odd transfer saga.

One things for sure, it is going to come to an end soon, but which set of fans will come out with a smile on there faces?

Both managers will talk a good game. Rodgers is good with words and Brian is so honest and down to earth, very refreshing. Reading offering more than Liverpool must show Siggy that he means something here and would be a player the team is built around in future. I believe he's actually a Manchester United fan and he knows SAF is interested in him. Perhaps the fact that signing for Liverpool would make the united move much more difficult.

All in all i still think Lpool will get their man, but this is a HUGE sign of intent and a glimpse of things to come :)

According to Paul - @royaltypoints on twitter, Glyfi's dad spoke to Icelandic Radio today and this is what was said,

Breaking:Gylfie's dad,Sigurdur Adalsteinsson has just interviewed on an Icelandic radio station and what he said was that Gylfie enjoyed working under Brendan Rodgers, and this matter will be resolved by this weekend. However we do understand that the spurs offer is still but according to his dad he has NOT decided on anything yet.

      DECISION BY END OF WEEK

An Icelandic man posted something in there native language on twitter "Jurnalis asal Islandia mengatakan Reading dan Liverpool FC adalah klub terdepan untuk mendapatkan tanda tangan Gylfi Sigurdsson. Hmmm'. Having google translated it I can confim it meant something along the lines of "Journalists say the original Icelandic Reading and Liverpool FC are leading the club to get the signature Gylfi Sigurdsson. Hmmm"
This could mean that both clubs are fighting it out. It also could of meant something like "The former Reading player's signature is being led by #LFC"

It appears the English media haven't got a bloody clue what is going on.

Although a Spurs source seems adamant the deal was struck last Friday, and it is a case of announcing their new manager before Sigurdsson signs.

I am taking everything with a pinch of salt, as it appears every journalist, agent and reliable source has been hit with a credibility and reliability scare with the news that Tottenham look set to seal the deal.

I have put my hands up as i was informed of Liverpools interest and Readings. Swansea have been in discussions for a while with their offer being accepted by Hoffenheim 3 weeks ago.. Unfortunately after Rodgers left it allowed the big clubs to steal a march on the Swans.

BBC report Spurs have lined up the Icelander for a medical tomorrow.... again will have to wait and see with this.

I will be truely shocked if Rodgers doesn't get his man..... though fair play to Tottenham if true, cracking player at a steal of a price.

Reading completely ruled out of the running as well it has been confirmed today by an Icelandic journalist...

Will Liverpool up their offer? or will the talented 22-year old be on his way to White Hart Lane?

Either way if there was ever value in the market, you can't look any futher than the attacking midfielder who will continue his progress to the top and shine for his new club this coming season

As a Reading fan, good luck Gylfi, and remember if you ever fancy a cheeky loan move, we are just down the road

Considering we are looking to not get Sigurdsson who would we buy as a replacement or are we not looking for another midfielder?
